The art of live performance is why I play music. There is no greater feeling than playing to a responsive crowd. You need them and they need you, a perfect symbiotic relationship. Artist often get hung up on art for art-sake but playing a song people need in that moment (yes even a cover) is to feed that person’s soul. Have you ever been to a club with a DJ and he’s playing songs that express perfectly how you feel? It is as if the DJ is mind reading just you. That is special but it happens because we are all of this earth (not sure sometimes) and feel the happiness, sadness, frustration, love, etc… that humans create each day. Art is just a reflection of the human experience. Live performance is never perfect nor is it supposed to be. I look at every show differently; sometimes its smooth and cheerful, other shows are more of a battle of getting your point across to an audience. Each experience meaningful to the artist and hopefully respected by the audience. If some shows were not a struggle we wouldn’t learn or have as much to express the next time just like life experience molds who we are. Day after day is a constant evolution of our being.
I will leave you with a few cool quotes from Miles Davis.
“Nothing is out of the question for me. I’m always thinking about creating. My future starts when I wake up in the morning and see the light…Then I’m grateful.”
“Do not fear mistakes. There are none.”
“Sometimes you have to play a long time to be able to play like yourself.”
